Neurotoxins, such as Botox®, Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau®, are injectable treatments designed to temporarily relax specific facial muscles to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. These products contain botulinum toxin type A, which works by blocking nerve signals to the muscles. When the muscles are unable to contract, the overlying skin smooths out, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Neurotoxins are injected into targeted muscles to prevent their contractions.
This creates a smoother appearance of dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles caused by facial expressions, like frown lines or crow's feet).
By reducing muscle movement, neurotoxins also help prevent future wrinkles from forming or deepening.
Neurotoxins are effective for treating various aesthetic and medical concerns:
Forehead Lines: Smooths horizontal lines that develop on your forehead when raising your eyebrows.
Glabellar Lines (Frown Lines): Reduces the “11” lines between your eyebrows.
Crow's Feet: Softens wrinkles at the outer corners of your eyes.
Bunny Lines: Diminishes fine lines on the nose.
Lip Lines (Smoker's Lines): Softens vertical lines around the mouth.
Jawline Slimming: In certain cases, neurotoxins can slim the jaw by relaxing the masseter muscles.
Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis): Reduces sweating by blocking nerve signals to sweat glands in the underarms, hands, or feet.
Botox®: One of the most popular neurotoxins, approved for treating forehead lines, crow's feet, and frown lines. Results usually appear in a few days and last 3-4 months.
Dysport®: Similar to Botox, but has a slightly different protein structure, which may spread more easily, making it effective for larger treatment areas like the forehead.
Xeomin®: Known as a “naked” neurotoxin because it doesn’t have additives, which may reduce the risk of developing resistance to the treatment over time. Results last about 3-4 months.
Jeuveau®: A newer neurotoxin similar to Botox, primarily used for glabellar lines. Results last about 3-4 months.
Early signs of aging: If you’re starting to see wrinkles appear when making facial
expressions, neurotoxins can help.
Maintenance and prevention: Even in your late 20s or early 30s, neurotoxin treatments
can prevent wrinkles from deepening.
Jawline reshaping: If you have a wide jawline due to overactive masseter muscles,
neurotoxins may help create a more tapered look.
Pre-Treatment: Your provider will cleanse the treatment area, and a topical numbing cream may be applied if you’re sensitive to needles.
Injection: A fine needle is used to inject the neurotoxin into targeted muscles. Each injection only takes a few seconds, and the entire treatment usually lasts 10-20 minutes.
Pain Level: Most people feel only minimal discomfort, often described as a slight pinching sensation.
Onset of Results: Results typically appear within 2-7 days, with full effects visible around 2 weeks after treatment.
Duration: Results last about 3-4 months, after which you can repeat the treatment to maintain the effects.
Maintenance: With regular treatments, many people find that they need fewer units over time to achieve the same results, as the muscles are conditioned to relax.
Minimal Downtime: You can return to daily activities immediately after treatment.
Post-Treatment Instructions: Avoid touching or massaging the treated area for 4-6 hours to prevent the neurotoxin from spreading to unintended muscles. Avoid strenuous exercise, heat exposure (like saunas), and alcohol for 24 hours to reduce the risk of bruising and swelling.
Common Side-Effects: Mild swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection sites.
Less Common Side-Effects: Temporary headache, slight drooping of the eyelid or eyebrow (if the neurotoxin migrates to an unintended area), or asymmetry if one side of the face reacts differently.
Rare Side Effects: Muscle weakness or difficulty swallowing, though this is uncommon in aesthetic treatments when administered by an experienced professional.
Most side effects are mild and temporary, resolving within a few days to a week. Following post-
treatment instructions can help minimize these effects.
Neurotoxins may not be suitable for you if you have any of the following:
Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Known allergy to botulinum toxin or any of the ingredients in the neurotoxin products.
A history of neuromuscular disorders, such as myasthenia gravis or ALS, as these conditions may increase your sensitivity to the effects of neurotoxins.
Active infection or inflammation at the intended injection site.
Recent surgery or other cosmetic treatments near the area to be treated.
