Stretch marks are streaks or lines that appear on the skin when it stretches rapidly, often due to pregnancy, weight gain, or puberty. They can be red, purple, or silver in color and may fade over time.
Stretch marks can appear anywhere on the body and affect both men and women. They occur when the skin has been stretched too far or too fast. The most common areas are the thighs, abdomen, buttocks, lower back, hips, arms, and breasts. They can appear for many different reasons, including genetics, weight fluctuation, puberty, pregnancy, and ethnicity.
CO2 Laser Treatment
Laser therapy is the most effective and preferred method to significantly reduce the appearance of stretch marks. An ablative laser, such as the CO2 laser, is used to ablate a fraction of the skin, thereby promoting cell turnover and collagen remodeling in the ablated areas.
Stretch mark treatment is not a quick fix. If you are looking to smooth out the texture and not just lighten the discoloration, you may need a series of treatments.
Sometimes, stretch marks only need one ablative laser treatment, but this largely depends on the size and severity of the stretch marks. Patients can receive a series of three to as many as eight sessions over several weeks to achieve the maximum improvement.
