Kybella® is an FDA-approved injectable treatment designed to reduce moderate to severe submental fullness, often known as a "double chin." It contains deoxycholic acid, a synthetic version of a naturally occurring substance in your body that helps break down and absorb dietary fat. When Kybella is injected into the fat beneath your chin, it destroys fat cells, resulting in a more contoured and defined jawline.

How it Works

Deoxycholic acid, the active ingredient in Kybella, disrupts the cell membrane of fat
cells, causing them to burst and release their contents.
Once destroyed, these fat cells are gradually removed by your body's natural metabolic
processes.
The destroyed cells are gone permanently, so the effects are long-lasting, as long as you
maintain a stable weight.

Kybella is specifically indicated for the reduction of submental fullness, which can be caused by
various factors, such as:

Genetics: Some people have a natural predisposition to store fat under the chin, even if
they’re not overweight.
Aging: As you age, fat distribution and skin laxity can contribute to a fuller appearance
under the chin.

What to Expect During the Procedure

oil, to minimize bruising.
Marking and Mapping: On the day of the procedure, the area under your chin will be
cleaned, and your provider will mark the injection points for precise placement.
Numbing: A topical numbing cream or local anesthetic may be applied to minimize discomfort.
Injections: Your provider will use a small needle to inject Kybella into multiple areas
under your chin. The number of injections varies depending on the amount of fat being
treated.
Treatment Duration: The procedure typically takes 15-20 minutes, but you should allow for
around 30 minutes total for preparation and aftercare instructions.

Results and Recovery

Onset of Results: You may start seeing some changes as early as 4-6 weeks after your
first session, but full results typically become visible after two to four treatments.
Sessions Required: Most people require two to four treatments spaced about four to six
weeks apart, though up to six treatments may sometimes be needed for optimal results.
Longevity: Once the fat cells are destroyed, they do not regenerate, so results are
considered permanent, assuming you maintain a stable weight.

Downtime and Recovery

Minimal Downtime: You may experience some swelling, bruising, redness, and
tenderness under the chin after the treatment. This is normal and usually resolves within a
few days to a week.
Post-Treatment Care: It’s recommended to avoid strenuous activities, saunas, and
alcohol for the first 24 hours after treatment to minimize swelling and bruising.
Swelling: Swelling is a common side effect, and it’s often more pronounced after the first
treatment. Cold compresses can help alleviate any discomfort.

Recovery Timeline

First 24-48 Hours: Swelling, bruising, and tenderness are most noticeable during this
time. Cold compresses and over-the-counter pain relief can help.
3-5 Days: Swelling and discomfort generally start to subside.
1-2 Weeks: Residual swelling may persist, but most side effects should be minimal by
this time.

nerve injury in the jaw, leading to an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness. These are
rare and typically resolve on their own.

Contraindications

You’re pregnant or breastfeeding.
Have an active infection or swelling in the treatment area.
Have difficulty swallowing or a history of bleeding problems.
Have significant skin laxity or sagging, which could result in suboptimal results without
additional skin-tightening treatments.
Have had previous surgeries or aesthetic treatments in the area, which could alter the
treatment outcome.
