Dermal fillers are injectable treatments designed to restore lost volume, smooth lines, soften creases, or enhance your facial contours. By adding
volume under the skin, fillers help diminish the appearance of wrinkles and provide a more youthful look. Many fillers also stimulate collagen production, enhancing skin elasticity and firmness over time.
Fillers are injected into specific areas of your face to add volume, fill deep lines, or improve contours.
They physically support and lift the tissues, immediately improving skin texture and volume.
Some fillers, especially those containing hyaluronic acid (HA), attract water, which provides additional hydration to the treated area.
Dermal fillers can address a variety of cosmetic concerns:
Nasolabial Folds: To soften deep folds that run from your nose to your mouth.
Marionette Lines: To reduce lines that extend downward from the corners of your mouth.
Cheek Enhancement: Add volume to your cheeks, enhancing contour and structure.
Lip Augmentation: Plump and define your lips, adding shape and volume.
Jawline and Chin: Define and sculpt your jawline and improve the shape of your chin.
Under-Eye Hollows (Tear Troughs): Fills in hollows beneath your eyes, reducing dark shadows.
Fine Lines: Reduces fine lines, especially around your mouth and eyes.
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) Fillers: These are the most common type, with brands like Juvederm®, Restylane®, and Belotero®. HA is a naturally occurring substance that adds volume, hydrates and stimulates collagen production. It's popular due to its immediate eMect and low risk of allergic reactions.
Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) Fillers: These thicker fillers, found in products like Radiesse®, are used for deeper lines and wrinkles. They also stimulate collagen production for longer-lasting effects.
Poly-L-Lactic Acid Fillers: Found in Sculptra®, this filler gradually stimulates collagen production over a series of treatments and is used to address volume loss.
Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) Fillers: Found in Bellafill®, this semi-permanent filler stimulates collagen growth and provides long-lasting results. It's often used for deeper folds and volume restoration.
Autologous Fat Injections: Involves transferring fat from one area of your body to your face. This technique requires a minor surgical procedure but provides a natural, long-lasting result.
If you notice volume loss or deep lines due to age or weight loss, dermal fillers can help restore a youthful look.
If you want to enhance specific facial features, such as your cheeks or lips, without surgery.
If you’re seeking a non-permanent, non-surgical solution to refine yourfacial contours and add subtle volume.
When dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles that appear with expressions) start turning into static wrinkles that remain even when your face is at rest.
When you’re looking for fuller features, like lips or cheeks, but don’t want a permanent change.
If you’d like to refine facial contours without a surgical procedure.
Pre-Treatment: The area will be cleaned, and a topical numbing cream may be applied to minimize discomfort.
Injection: The filler will be injected into the targeted area using a fine needle or cannula. Your provider may massage the area to distribute the product evenly.
Duration: The procedure generally takes 15-45 minutes, depending on the number of areas treated.
Pain Level: Discomfort is usually minimal, especially with the use of numbing cream and HA fillers that contain lidocaine (a local anesthetic).
Immediate Improvement: You’ll typically see results immediately, although mild swelling may temporarily affect the final appearance.
Duration: Most fillers last between 6-18 months, depending on the type of filler, the area treated, and your metabolism.
Maintenance: Regular treatments can help you maintain your desired look, and in some cases, the collagen-stimulating effects of fillers provide cumulative benefits.
Most people experience minimal downtime, and you can generally return to your daily activities right after the procedure.
Some mild swelling, bruising, or redness at the injection sites is common, but these effects usually resolve within a few days.
Avoid touching or massaging the treated area to prevent filler movement.
Avoid intense exercise, alcohol, and sun exposure for at least 24 hours to reduce the risk of swelling and bruising.
Using a cold compress on the treated area can help with any swelling or discomfort.
Common Side-Effects: Swelling, bruising, redness, and tenderness at the injection sites.
Less Common Side-Effects: Lumps or irregularities if the filler is not distributed evenly, which can be corrected by a skilled provider.
Rare Side Effects: Allergic reactions, infection, or vascular occlusion (blockage of blood vessels), which is serious but very rare. Immediate treatment can resolve this if it happens.
Most side effects are mild and temporary, resolving within a few days to a week. Following post-
treatment instructions can help minimize these effects.
Dermal fillers may not be suitable for you if you have any of the following conditions:
Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Active infection or inflammation at the injection site.
Known allergy to filler ingredients or lidocaine.
History of severe allergies, especially those that required emergency intervention (anaphylaxis).
Recent or planned dental work, as this can increase the risk of infection near filler sites (especially around the mouth).
